We’ve reached our goal (In theory!) We currently sit at $225 out of $275 that I needed. I will cover the last $50 (probably $75). This will in theory continue to keep the site running a full year without any more donations. (If you want to donate to my beer fund, or feed me Subway when I’m working on the server I’m always up for it but there’s no pressure).
I want to give a heartfelt thanks to all of our donors for this. I honestly expected that we’d make maybe $20 on GoFundMe and not this. I rely on this chat as much as y’all do even if it’s not always for mental health, but just chatting. Thanks to this we will continue chatting for the foreseeable future AND I get the plugin I wanted to make the site more secure. I love waking up and making the best possible chat experience for everyone.
(Don’t tell my boss this, but I’m more worried about keeping this website online and working than I worry about keeping my actual job’s website online… sshhhhh)
The server bill was much much higher than I had ever anticipated (like double and then some). As such I’ve rebuilt the servers using less powerful but cheaper servers. The server move appears to have gone off with only (minor) hiccups but should be fine now. I now expect the server bill to be under $15 a month vs the almost $50 we were paying originally.
Unfortunately due to my housing situation and more than likely losing most if not all of my income, I’ve had to start a GoFundMe page for the site to cover the site expenses as I can no longer cover them out of my own pocket. I never planned for the site to exist for more than a few months as I had hoped that Crazyboards would have a new chat up sooner rather than later. However if what VelvetElvis said is true (that most of us won’t be welcome back) we’ll continue needing the site for the foreseeable future. While $275 seems like a lot of money I’ll break it down:
- The servers (we have two) cost $6 a month each (so $12 total) ($160 a year give or take)
- There’s a plugin for WordPress that I badly want that’d take some stress off of me to keep the site secure. The free version works, however it requires a fair bit of work on my end. Paying for the plugin will automate a lot of the work I do behind the scenes. It’s $100 a year.
The plugin is just a wish. We will be fine for another ~9 months if we can raise the $160 a year and then we’d need another $204 to buy another year of the service we use for chat (IFlyChat) around May 2018.
We are hoping to get an influx of new users due to Becs working on the site and helping our Google rankings. While I enjoy our close little group (Y’all are the reason I agreed to do this in the first place, I’d miss you all), I’d love to see us grow and prosper into a proper chatroom. I’m debating adding proper forums to rival Crazyboards, but I need to discuss it with the others firsts.
Due to security risks with people running their own blogs, I’m no longer allowing people to have their own blogs except in special circumstances (Basically you have to prove to me I can trust you to keep your site secure. One hacked blog can lead to them all being hacked and that’s bad m’kay). Instead I’m allowing people to write posts on the main site such as Becs and I do. My only requirement is you follow Chat rules, and keep it life/MI related. Please no excessive drama. If you’d like this let Zoey know and I’ll give you access. I’m kind of terrible at explaining this type of stuff, so the best I can do to show you is to link you a website with the directions. Sorry.
