I made a booboo and hopefully our WordPress Expert Becs can fix it easily. Somehow when I wrote the latest note on the chat page (where the most people will see it), it put the sidebar of the site under chat as if I was on a mobile device even on a giant computer screen. I have no idea what I did but Becs is good.
I’m also going to give you an update on chat.
I was working with IFlyChat support last night with roles being able to use certain channels, and the topic of IFlyChat v3 came up. Initial beta testing of V3 is supposed to start this week. I was warned that it is not currently production ready so I will not replace our current chat until it’s officially released (they said the end of August / first week of November) and heavily tested.
The new features it totes are:
- Audio/Video calling through chat
- Screen sharing (showing your desktop to other members)
- Improved moderation features
- Offline message support.
I can tell you right off the bat that both the Calling and screen sharing will be disabled the second it’s installed. A lot of members prefer to be anonymous and being able to call / video chat isn’t very private. I don’t think anyone will use screen sharing (I might for some tutorial stuff on the site) but not that often.
I’m excited for the improved moderation features, and I think everyone will love being able to message offline users.
I will setup another page with the new version of chat for us to test. I’m going to try and get all of our tech experts to try their best to find bugs and report them to make the best chat experience we can.
Also a chat admin update:
After talking with the IFlyChat engineer (who was awesome BTW), All current admins have been “demoted” from admin status. Everyone is still a moderator and has kick/ban powers, but they no longer have the power to create/delete channels and change a few other settings in the backend of chat. I have also removed site admin access from people that I thought were needed to be an admin in chat. Current mods (in theory) should still be able to access mod chat and go about their daily routines without noticing anything different. After a few ‘incidents’ with one mod and posts randomly appearing / being deleted I thought it was safest. Anyone that currently has the ability to write new blog posts still has them, but are no longer assigned the “Administrator” role that gave them access to literally everything on the site.
I’m hoping the update to chat won’t bring any drastic changes to our daily lives, but you have no idea with updates as big as this one.
For those of you that want to write blog posts on the site (since I’m no longer allowing members to run their own blog except for special people with strict rules) I’m going to try and make a video tutorial on how to write your first post, and learn your way around WordPress. I have the typical techy person problem where I’m not the best teacher on the planet because most of what I do is muscle memory but I’ll try my best to show you. It’s not too difficult as WordPress is supposed to be quite easy to pick up (at least the basics are usually). This will probably be the only time we use the screen sharing feature of V3 of chat.
